Prayers For Pastors and Congregations–On the First Sunday of January 2019
A Prayer for Pastors: O Lord, I thank You for the refreshment and opportunity for renewal of my faith in You that a new year brings. I am ready to focus my personal life for the coming year as the undershepherd of my congregation. May I model by my words and deeds what it means to be a fully devoted follower of Christ. My congregation needs to see my example, yet by the way I reflect You may I point them to You and not to me. May I call on them to be an example of the life and ministry of Jesus in their home, workplace, and community. May I lift them up when they fail and may their lift me up when I fail. May all of us seek to be lifted up by You. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
A Prayer for Congregations: O Lord, is it already the first Sunday of a new year? Where did Christmas go? Once again I made it through the family gatherings I love so much, but could not avoid that relative I dread so much. The warmth of family reminds me of the love of Jesus. The dread of specific family members tests my Christian character. In the new year may I finally find ways to deal appropriately with relationships, with health, with work, with my faithfulness to church, and most of all with my commitment to You. Help my weakness in those times when I need strength. May I commit to and follow through with a deeper relationship with You this year. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
