Prayers For Pastors and Congregations–First Sunday, September 2018
A Prayer for Pastors: O Lord, this is a season of the year when for many families it is difficult to be generous with finances. Children and grandchildren have gone back to school. There were the clothes, the books, the supplies, the many things for a dorm room, and just as we thought that was all, the fundraisers for sports, clubs, and other organizations came along. Help me as I proclaim the Living Word—Jesus the Christ—this weekend to teach by word and deed that generosity is a lifestyle commitment of finances, acts of kindness, committing time to come alongside those who need us, and many other expressions of Your unconditional love. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
A Prayer for Congregations: O Lord, in a way this is the final weekend of summer. One during which we can relax before the steady and heavy schedule of the fall. I am not sure I can do church this weekend. I am depleted with getting the summer over, children back to school, writing all those checks or piling up credit card debts. Is it all right if I spend some money on myself by going to a football game or doing something else other than church? I seek to have a generous spirit, and to exemplify it with actions. But today I want some “me-time.” In the name of Jesus, I pray hoping for an immediate answer. Amen.
