Prayers for Pastors and Congregations–Fourth Weekend of February 2019
A Prayer for Pastors: O Lord, proclaiming Your Word is essential and a powerful force. I am reminded of the power of Your Word as I think about the winds that have been blowing in the past few days. The wind did a lot of damage in a lot of places. So, were You in the wind during these days? I am reminded of the experience of Elijah in 1 Kings 19 when there was a great wind, an earthquake, and a fire. But Your presence was most experienced in a gentle wind. May I proclaim Your Word this weekend with boldness, and yet also with a voice sufficiently gentle that the people to whom I preach may experience You passing by. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen!
A Prayer for Congregations: O Lord may I anticipate worship this weekend as a time I will experience in a special way Your presence in my life. In preparation for worship, I am reminded of the words of 1 Kings 19:11-2—”So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.” May I listen intently as I worship for Your still, small voice. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
