Prayers For Pastors and Congregations–On the First Sunday of Advent, December 2018

A Prayer for Pastors: O Lord, so quickly the celebration of the American holiday of Thanksgiving moves into the Christian season of Advent. As I preach and teach to my congregation, and care for the people, may I help them see the multiple meanings of Advent—the coming of Jesus. May I proclaim the coming of the baby Jesus to live as a man and to be our sacrifice. May I urge that receiving Jesus into our lives is the way to our salvation and eternal life. May I help followers of Jesus anticipate His second coming and a spirit of living life in Christ in a watchful manner. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Congregations: O Lord, the calendar tells me we have one additional week this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That does not reduce the stress I feel about this season of the year. May I in the middle of the hurry of the season increase my desire to gather with other Christians to celebrate the coming of Jesus as a baby, into our lives, and in the culmination of earthly history. May Jesus being the reason for the season not just be a pithy saying but the deep meaning that warms my heart, soul, mind, and strength.  In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
