Thursday, June 6, 2019: “A Call to Action”: Conducting a Congregational Assessment and Learning Experience (CALE). Today is the first time in my 23 months as Executive Director of the Columbia Metro Baptist Association when I suggested to a pastor in the CMBA that the next step in their attempts at revitalization would be a CALE. This is even though I have conducted many of these in congregations of various denominations and all sizes over the past 20-plus years.

What is a CALE? It is a four-day (Friday mid-afternoon through Monday @Noon) series of gatherings in a local congregation to begin a process of moving them from where they are to where God is leading them. It is not prescriptive, but catalytic. It is not training, but a dialogue. It is not about meeting with a small group of people but having at least one gathering where the whole congregation is invited and other gatherings where people can sign up to participate.

It is about helping the congregation understand their current situation. It is about being inspired to consider a spiritual and strategic journey that could take them to where God is seeking to lead them. It is about being pulled into the future rather than pushed into the future. It even includes a First Impressions assessment.
