Prayers for Pastors and Congregations–First Weekend of February
A Prayer for Pastors: O Lord, this is a challenging weekend for clarity around the message I need to share with those gathered in worship. Too many minds are going to be on the Super Bowl taking place on Sunday, or about the commercials that will be shown, or about the party they are going to attend. In fact, it is so common among my congregation that even I am one of these people. Help me to help all of us focus on the only one who is truly a super person—Jesus the Christ. Inspire in me a story, a metaphor, a memorable statement, or a scripture that will clearly communicate the essence of the gospel to people who need the super experience of Your eternal life. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
A Prayer for Congregations: O Lord, it is hard to believe we have already finished a month of this new year. Januarys are always crazy. New opportunities. New challenges. New spiritual insights. New sacred cows of congregational culture we have tripped over once again. And, already broken resolutions for a new beginning in crucial places of our lives. Perhaps are ought to all gather for worship and once again in the spirit of Psalm 51 to ask You to create within us a clean heart. To renew a right spirit with us. May this be so as we gather for worship, fellowship, and discipleship. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
